Check Out The Latest Handheld GPS... It Will Blow You Away!

By Edwardo Mascasas

Today there are a lot of handheld GPS Receivers which are out in the market, that it is becoming very difficult to find the best one. Most receivers are of similar specification and some just vary in price depending upon the manufacturer.

When choosing a handheld unit, think about the variety of situations in which you could make use of it. Do not try to disregard the fact that the same GPS receiver used off-road can also be used when walking in strange towns, hiking, bicycling, boating, or marking landmarks like gas stations or restaurants on long road trips.

The biggest shortcoming of handhelds is their less-than-impressive mapping capabilities. Here are some in demand handheld GPS that you can check out.

* Magellan Meridian Platinum

This is one of Magellans newer ranges of handheld GPS Receivers. These are very rugged, built to last and are for the serious navigators in mind. It has buttons which are better laid out than other GPS receivers and are easier to press.

Like various other handheld GPS receivers, the Meridian Platinum can track up to 12 satellites at any one time out of the current constellation, and fully supports WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) in the US and EGNOS in Europe.

With current GPS accuracy, the Meridian can be exact within 3 meters or better depending on the line of sight to the satellites and the amount of strong satellite signals the receiver has.

* Garmin eTrex Vista

This is the most feature-packed version of all the eTrex line. It comes with a base map that has been designed to work with a number of additional downloadable maps. Get a friction mount...All mobile GPS units come provided with suction cup mount and dashboard plate. You can stick the plate on the dash and mount the unit that way, or you can mount directly on the windshield. Friction mounts are pads with a non-slip rubber bottom that will hold your mobile GPS in place without the need to "suck" it anywhere. To find a friction mount for your particular device, eBay has it. For example, if I wanted to find one for the StreetPilot c330 I just search for streetpilot c330 friction mount. For the c580 I search for streetpilot c580 friction mount. You get the idea. Note: Car vent mounts SUCK (pun intended) as do cup holder mounts. Do not buy those. Spend the extra cash and go with the friction mount. Trust me on that one.

Tip: It only works outdoors...The device works best under a clear sky. The satellite signal gets easily blocked by roofs, or even tall buildings nearby.

How to enable voice recognition on a TomTom GO 720...
* You MUST have North America map version 7.10 AND you MUST have firmware version for the unit 2.221 to make the feature work.
* IF you have them, then you create a text file (use notepad) called support_asr.dat that contains JUST the number 1. No other spaces, carriage returns or anything.
* Place this file in your ASR folder on the unit.
* You'll be good to go ... this is of course assuming your unit is a TomTom 720.
* Now, on the unit, Navigate to-->Address-->Spoken Word (Dialogue)

Write Here, Write Now: And you thought you were overloaded with information now, just wait. Hewlett Packard is working on a technology to let folks print messages in mid-air based on their location incorporating GPS technology. I find this stuff fascinating, even if no one seems to have thought of a good use for it yet. When the ALA summer conference was in San Francisco in 1997, the SF Museum of Modern Art had a fascinating exhibit called Icons: Magnets of Meaning. I spent hours browsing through it, but one of the pieces that has always stuck in my mind was called @: Marking the Electrosphere . It talked about the meaning of that one little symbol. How it can define, place, and root you in the world, but at the same time let you be found anywhere. Integrated, widespread use of GPS is going to take this to a whole new level.
